The Library is very pleased to announce the launch of the new Generative AI (GenAI) tutorial - "Critical GenAI Literacy". The guide is intended to enable us to scale up the provision of Critical Gen AI literacy training that can be made available to all students across the University, as this is an essential skill they will all need for the future.
This is a replacement for our original Libguide, and is now in a more interactive tutorial format. We have designed it so that it can be used for independent study by all students, but have also aimed to make the content as granular as possible, so that academic colleagues can use specific sections of it for in-class teaching. We have also designed it with a range of practical tasks and reflective activities, again for independent study or class-based teaching. We are working with colleagues from Elevate to develop some guidance for academic colleagues on how they can best use the guide with their students.
The guide covers essential topics that enable students to view GenAI in its wider socio-economic and socio-technical context. It features topics including inaccuracies in GenAI outputs, bias, disinformation, employment issues, copyright concerns, the impact of GenAI on creativity and questions about the role of AI in wider society. The tutorial also includes a section on "GenAI in your studies", in which students can reflect on the role of GenAI in their own disciplines, and their own assessed work. The tutorial concludes with a section where students are invited to consider their own agenda for using GenAI in their studies and beyond, based on the contents of the tutorial.
We are very keen to work with any colleagues who might be interested in using the new guide to support any Critical GenAI literacy teaching they are doing in the coming academic year. If you or any colleagues might be interested in this, do please contact us at library@sheffield.ac.uk
