My journey as a fully funded student at the University of Sheffield has been a transformative experience
My journey as a fully funded student at the University of Sheffield has been a transformative experience. One that has not only broadened my academic horizons, but also deeply enriched my personal and professional life.
Studying across two departments has truly been an enlightening experience - like living in two distinct worlds, each rich with insights and perspectives. Integrating the principles of public health with the broader concepts of international development has allowed me to explore the intersections of these fields. It has equipped me with a multidimensional understanding of global challenges. The depth of learning I've gained has been amplified as each course has offered me new perspectives, practical knowledge and invaluable connections with lecturers and peers who will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors.
Sheffield has been a breath of fresh air — literally and figuratively. The city’s lush green spaces are a constant reminder of the beauty that can exist in urban environments. Beyond the physical landscape, it’s the warmth and openness of the people here that have made Sheffield feel like home. The sense of community is palpable, and I’ve found myself embraced by a network of supportive and inspiring individuals.
Outside the classroom, I have sought to make the most of my time in Sheffield by immersing myself in extracurricular activities that align with my passions. Serving as the Vice President for Sheffield World Health Organisation (WHO) has been a remarkable experience. Planning the Model WHO Simulation event for 2024, which saw an impressive turnout, was a highlight. This role has not only honed my leadership skills but also deepened my understanding of global health governance.
My commitment to social justice led me to work with the Change Lab society, where I helped plan Refugee Action Week in collaboration with City of Sanctuary. Volunteering with this organisation allowed me to contribute to meaningful initiatives that support and uplift those in need.
Another cherished moment was launching FemmeCircle Global, a network that has connected 90 women from around the world to share knowledge on careers, global
opportunities, and scholarship education. Seeing this community flourish and knowing that it is making a real impact has been incredibly rewarding—an accomplishment
made possible in part by the support I’ve received through this scholarship.
Currently, I am engaged with the Matahari Foundation as a researcher conducting a scoping project on gender considerations and public health emergencies across Africa and Asia. This work aligns with my passion for addressing the intersection of gender, development, and public health, and I am excited about the potential impact. In the coming years, I hope to continue building on the foundations I’ve gained here at Sheffield, working on development issues at scale with a focus on the LMIC (Low and Middle-Income Countries) region.
There are moments in life that define us, and this scholarship has been one of those moments for me. It’s not just the degree; it’s the journey, the growth, and the opportunities that have come with it. This master’s degree from a prestigious university would have been a distant dream without your support.
I hope to one day contribute to this bursary myself and to help select future scholars who will benefit from the same life-changing support that I have received.
