Profile

Delphine completed her BA in Philosophy at the University of Sheffield followed by her MA in Philosophy at the same institution. She had the opportunity to work with Robert Stern on various topics within ethics, from Kant’s  categorical imperative to Løgstrup’s ethical demand. She is now embarking on her PhD journey funded by WRoCAH.

Delphine is currently developing a phenomenological approach to animal ethics, drawing on the work of Emmanuel Levinas and Knud Løgstrup, which challenges prevailing approaches, such as Singer’s utilitarianism and Nussbaum’s capabilities model. Rather than using capacities such as sentience as the yardstick for determining which animals should be included within our moral framework, she offers a Levinasian understanding of ethics opened up by our proximity to a vulnerable Other who places a demand upon us. Delphine’s philosophical interests include animal ethics, phenomenology, Hegel, normative ethics and animal cognition.
