Why did you choose to study at Sheffield?
I really enjoyed the look of the course and the learning styles, and fell in love with the city of Sheffield as soon as I visited!
Has your experience so far been what you expected?
I didn't expect the course to be so independent, but I have enjoyed that aspect. Otherwise, my experience has been as exciting and interesting as I had hoped it would be!
What do you particularly enjoy about your degree programme?
I have particularly enjoyed the breadth of my studies. This has allowed me to explore a wide array of historical periods I am interested in but have not studied before at school. As well as this, I've also really liked the different lecturers we have had this semester, as they have all provided different styles and subjects that have really improved my experience.
What modules are you studying this year? Are there any modules that you have particularly enjoyed during your degree so far and why?
This year I've studied a number of different modules, currently the Making of the Twentieth-Century, Transformation of The United Kingdom, and the Disenchantment of Early Modern Europe. Specific modules I have enjoyed have been Transformation of the United Kingdom, as I have a keen interest in socio-political events of this period, and have had a lack of this kind of content in school. I also really enjoyed Paths from Modernity to Antiquity, as this took a very wide look at European history from 25bce until the fall of the Berlin Wall, which was hugely interesting and enlightening.
If you’ve undertaken any extra-curricular activities, what do you feel these have added to your time here?
I have written for New Histories in my time here, which I found to be a very fulfilling and enjoyable process as it allowed me to explore an area I am interested in, this being journalistic writing. It also allowed me to get involved further with the department, and gave me an excuse to explore the history of my own village, something which I hadn't really examined up until this point.
Anything else that you want to say...?
First-year has had its ups and downs, but overall it has been everything I was excited to do for a history degree.
