ARO 2025
The Hearing Research Group contributions
Once again, between the 22nd and the 26th of February 2025, the Hearing Research Group went to the ARO (Association for Research in Otolaryngology) conference. This time, we went all the way to Orlando (FL, USA) to attend many interesting talks by other world-leading experts in hearing research, and share our own latest work.
Dr Samuel Webb gave an oral presentation on his and Dr Stuart Johnson's research on the mechanisms responsible for deafness following noise exposure. In particular, they showed that the primary target of noise-induced hearing loss is the mechanotransduction complex of inner hair cells, while other observed events such as dysfunctional synapses are seen as a secondary consequence.
Dr Samuel Webb and Dr Stuart Johnson presented a poster on the research they carried out on the role of a regulatory protein called LRRC52 in outer hair cell function and efferent inhibition.
In addition, Professor Walter Marcotti presented a poster on his work characterising the role a protein called MYOSIN7A (responsible for Usher syndrome type 1B and non-syndromic recessive deafness in humans when mutated) in maintaining the functional integrity hair cells.
