Welcome from the President and Vice-Chancellor

Today is a very special occasion as we celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2025.

Graduation is an important milestone, and an opportunity to recognise the remarkable achievements of our students. We are so proud of everything they have accomplished, and wish them every success for their next chapter.

I would like to offer a warm welcome to everyone who has travelled across the UK, or from around the world, to join us today – as well as those watching on our livestream. Thank you for supporting our students during their time with us. I hope you all enjoy this momentous day.

Professor Koen Lamberts

The Sheffield Affirmation

Statement of the Principles of the Hippocratic Oath to be presented by Professor Mark Strong.

Students in the Faculty of Health are encouraged, and taught, to aspire to the highest standards of professional behaviour and practise and we expect our graduates to maintain their high professional standards throughout their careers.

For many centuries, physicians were expected to take the Hippocratic Oath to give voice to the ideals of professional practise. But the Oath itself is no longer seen as fit for purpose - it was first penned in the 4th Century BC - and the University of Sheffield educates healthcare students of many different professional groups.

Now the University expects Faculty of Health students to take part in the Sheffield Affirmation, which places the care and protection of patients, and high professional expectations, in a modern context.

The Sheffield Affirmation to be led by Sam K Fenney

  • I will remain loyal to the high traditions and responsibilities of my profession.
  • The health and welfare of my patients and the public will be my paramount consideration. I will do my best for my patients and the public at all times and refrain from any action which may be harmful.
  • I will, in the course of my work, come into special relationships with my fellow human beings calling for great propriety and trust. I will avoid all wrong doing and anything mischievous or dishonourable.
  • Whatsoever I see or hear during my practice that ought to be kept secret, I will not divulge.

Honorary degrees

The University of Sheffield confers honorary degrees (or degrees honoris causa – as a ‘mark of honour’) on people who have given distinguished service or brought distinction to the University, the City of Sheffield or the region. They may be individuals of national or international standing or alumni of the University who have risen to the height of their chosen profession or field of expertise.

The University is proud to include many notable figures amongst its honorary graduates since the first honorary degree was awarded in 1908. This year is no exception.

Black and Gold awards

The University of Sheffield’s sporting scene thrives on the dedication and talent of its students. From elite athletes to unwavering committee members, these individuals embody commitment, leadership and a passion for sportsmanship. These qualities  go beyond the pitch or court, shaping them into well-rounded graduates ready to tackle any challenge.

This year, we’re particularly proud to recognise 45 exceptional students among our 6,000+ strong sporting community who have earned the prestigious Black and Gold Award. This select group has demonstrably gone above and beyond, making a lasting impact on Sheffield’s sporting landscape.

Their achievements:

  • Spiked the competition: Showcasing exceptional athletic talent and dedication to their chosen sport
  • Led the charge: Demonstrating outstanding leadership within their clubs and sports teams
  • Championed camaraderie: Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment within the sporting community

These Black and Gold Award winners follow in the footsteps of a rich sporting legacy spanning over 100 years at the University. Their contributions solidify a foundation for continued excellence, inspiring future generations of student athletes.

A heartfelt congratulations to all our Black and Gold Award recipients from the Sport and Physical Activity Sheffield team.
