Julian Payne Scholarship
We're offering two scholarships worth £3,500 each for home fee-paying students starting an eligible music masters course in 2026.
These scholarships are funded by the Julian Payne endowment. The successful applicants will have the £3,500 award paid towards their tuition fees.
Eligibility criteria
You can apply for a scholarship if you meet all of the following criteria:
- You are paying the 'home' rate of fees
- You are not already qualified at masters level or higher.
- You are self funded.
- You will be studying one of the courses listed below from September 2026.
How to apply
Applications will open before the end of March 2026. The deadline to apply is 1pm on Monday 18 May 2026.
You must hold an offer for an eligible course for your application to be considered.
All eligible applicants will be contacted regarding the outcome of their application before the end of June 2026.
Selection process
All applications will be reviewed by senior members of academic staff and/or professional services staff.
When reviewing your application we'll look at personal circumstances and take into account academic achievements. All applications are anonymised and the decision is discretionary and final.
When assessing your application, we will give regard to whether you have:
- provided a clear rationale for applying for your postgraduate course at the University of Sheffield;
- clearly identified how the scholarship will be beneficial to your student experience;
- clearly articulated future ambitions; these goals relate to the postgraduate degree you have applied for, and they involve appropriate and credible contribution from which others will benefit.
The scholarship application is a separate process to applying for a course. Being awarded a scholarship does not guarantee you will be made an academic offer. To apply for a course, use our Postgraduate online application form.
You are required to apply for an eligible course prior to submitting your scholarship application.
Further information
- Successful recipients of the scholarship will have the £3,500 scholarship paid towards their tuition fees. Any remaining fees will need to be paid by the student.
- You must be starting a new, stand alone, eligible postgraduate course in September 2026 at the University of Sheffield to receive the scholarship.
- For courses where the 'home' and 'overseas' tuition fee is the same, you must be assessed as being eligible to pay the 'home' rate fee.
- Part-time students will have the scholarship allocated to their fees on a pro-rata basis depending on their intensity of study.
- Students intending to take a postgraduate loan are classed as self-sponsored and are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
- Students studying by distance learning are not eligible to apply.
- Students in receipt of other University scholarships are not eligible to receive this scholarship.
- You cannot receive this scholarship and the Alumni Discount.
- Courses that are funded by the undergraduate funding system (eg full-time MArch), Social Work Bursary or are NHS funded are not eligible.
- Integrated masters are not eligible.
- You must not have already achieved a masters level qualification or higher.
- If you register for a course and then take a leave of absence, you are not eligible to apply again the following year once you become fully registered, even if you register on a different course. To be eligible to apply, you must withdraw from your course and reapply to the University as an applicant.
- If you take a leave of absence, we may not be able to pay any remaining scholarship funds towards your tuition fees when you return to your course.
- If you have a condition that can affect aspects of your written communication and would like panel members to be aware of this, let us know by emailing us at sheffieldscholars@sheffield.ac.uk.
- Full terms and conditions will be shared with scholarship recipients.
How the scholarships are funded
Many scholarships at the University are provided by donations from generous people, organisations and companies that want to support students. Many of the donors are alumni (former students) of the University of Sheffield.
This scholarship is funded by the Julian Payne endowment. The endowment was established in memory of Julian Payne, an outstanding student in the former Department of Music which is now part of the School of Languages, Arts and Societies. The Julian Payne Endowment Fund was established with funds contributed by his family and friends, and by staff and students in the Department, to give thanks for his life and in gratitude for the happy year he spent at Sheffield.
If you receive a donor funded scholarship you may be invited to relevant events during your studies at Sheffield.
