Placements and on-campus opportunities
Taking a year to work during your studies is becoming more popular. Paid placements range from creative multinational companies including Disney to small local firms in and around Sheffield. Gain new professional skills, get paid, and graduate with employment experience as part of your degree!
Placements
With so many career possibilities for a School of English student, it can be difficult to know where to start. Both internships (during both term time and in summer) and yearlong placements can act as fantastic methods of testing a career path whilst giving you a range of practical experience.
When taking a yearlong placement, upon graduation, “with placement year” will be added to your degree classification, further enhancing your ability to stand out from your peers. Many placement students receive a job offer from the organisation they worked for. Paid placements open to School of English students range from creative multinational companies including the likes of Disney and Warner Brothers to small local firms in and around the Sheffield area.
While placement recruitment is competitive you’ll have support from your department, the faculty, and the careers service every step of the way.

Some MA students also have the opportunity to complete the MA Work Placement. Find out more on Postgraduate study and research careers.
On-campus opportunities
There are also a wide range of opportunities to learn, work, and get paid during your studies. These include 100 hour work opportunities with the University, local charities and businesses.
We have a wide range of engaged learning and knowledge exchange schemes that provide opportunities for students, charities, and businesses to learn from each other.
Activities that have run in the past include:
- 100 hour third sector placements
-
This exciting paid opportunity is funded by a Sheffield alumnus who is especially keen to help current students gain community-based experience. It is run by Sheffield Students’ Union with the main purpose of supporting those who have faced barriers in gaining similar experience whilst at University. The scheme runs over the summer and applications open during semester 3.
- University of Sheffield internship programme
-
The University of Sheffield internship programme offers the chance to complete a 100 hour internship with an academic or professional service department within the university. These internships are open to all final year undergraduate and final year postgraduate taught students to apply for. They will provide you with valuable work experience and skills development opportunities to help transition into the world of work and prepare you for future employment.
Part-time jobs
For many students, a part time job during their studies gives them a chance to develop new skills, and make friends whilst earning some extra money.
Our careers service can help you with guidance on making applications, and our autumn part time jobs fair will help you find local employers.
All student staff roles at the university and Students’ Union match or exceed the Real Living Wage recommendations as set out by the Living Wage Foundation.
