Advanced wind turbine technology for urban environments
Supervisors: Professor Mohamed Pourkashanian, Professor Lin Ma and Professor Derek Ingham.
Wind is one of the main renewable energy sources in the world and wind turbines are the main technology that converts wind energy to electricity. The proposed research will focus on the design of a new generation of small sized wind turbines. One of the key areas that will be investigated is the characteristics of the aerodynamics of the turbine blades which have a significant impact on the efficiency of power generation, the level of noise produced and the durability of the wind turbine.
Advanced computational fluid dynamics and mathematical modelling and design technology will be developed together with supplementary experimental investigations to analyse and improve the overall performances of the wind turbine. The work will be part of a team effort in the wind energy research at Leeds.
