Tree works planned for Upper Hanover Street

Tree pruning to maintain public safety and tree health planned for August 2025

The University is carrying out essential pruning works on eight London Plane trees located next to Upper Hanover Street, opposite the University tram stop.

Following a routine tree risk assessment in April 2025, a small number of minor works were identified. These include lifting low branches over the footpath, highway and car park; clearing foliage around the street sign and traffic lights to improve visibility; and lightly reducing some end-weighted branches over the road to maintain safety.

The trees are not protected by Tree Preservation Orders and are outside a Conservation Area. The University is committed to responsible tree management and will carry out the work in line with British Standard BS3998:2010.

To protect local wildlife, the works have been scheduled for after the bird nesting season, in August, and all trees will be checked again for nesting birds before any pruning begins.

These trees are included in plans for the future Central Teaching Laboratory project, which is currently on hold. The current work is limited to essential pruning for safety and visibility.
