- Profile
-
I am currently a University Teacher in Dental Skills Simulation & Informatics in the School of Clinical Dentistry, Faculty of Health.
After previous roles in industry and local government, I joined the University in 2011 as a Research Software Engineer, leading the development of the University of Sheffield’s highly regarded Clinical Portfolio System. In 2016 I progressed to split my time with an academic role before transitioning to my current University Teacher role on a full time basis in 2023. Presently, I am a teacher and researcher in Virtual Reality Dental Simulation, I am School lead for VR Simulation and continue to guide the ongoing development of the Dentistry Portfolio and Dentistry ATS systems.
I have authored numerous highly influential publications describing innovations in the use of VR for dental education. My PhD and ongoing research explore how Virtual Reality can be used to its greatest effect in the pre-clinical environment and I have guided the development of Sheffield’s integrated approach to the use of VR in the undergraduate curriculum.
I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and actively support enhancing teaching practice across the School. I have established the Dental Teaching Recognition Support (DenTRS) scheme providing guidance and support to colleagues wishing to achieve HEA recognition via the University’s LTPRS scheme.

- Research interests
-
My research interests are in dental education and the use of innovative technology to enhance learning and teaching. My main area of interest relates to dental skills acquisition through the use of simulation and the most effective educational approaches for doing so. I am interested in projects that include:
- Virtual Reality Simulation and Haptic Force Feedback
- Intra-oral scanning for patient-specific simulation
- 3D Printing and its use in skills training
- Task Analysis for instructional design
- Deconstructed/Part Task Models of Training
- Psychomotor Skills Development
I also have a keen interest in portfolio-based education, approaches to feedback and how reflective practice supports skills development.
- Teaching activities
-
I lead the 1st year Virtual Reality Operative Dentistry course for Dentistry and Dental Hygiene and Therapy students. I also provide oversight of teaching in the simulation suite to ensure that content delivered across all programmes is following sound educational research-backed principles appropriate for the modality.
I teach the Clinical Development and the Dentistry Portfolio course to both 1st year Dentistry and 2nd year Dental Hygiene and Therapy cohorts. This course prepares them for effectively entering and reflecting on their clinical activities to support their progression on the clinical component of the course.
I also lead the delivery and summative assessment of the R Statistical Programming sub-course of the 3rd Year BSc module Principles of Bio-Dental Research.
Finally, I am supervisor for research projects as part of the Taught Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) and will soon begin PhD supervision of projects within my research area.
