Run in association with Jazz North, the multi-sited initiative (and its founder, Helena Summerfield) was awarded a much-coveted Parliamentary Jazz Award in 2022 for its contribution to music education.
As part of our commitment to educational outreach and widening participation, the University of Sheffield event gave fourteen young female jazz students (aged between 8-15) the opportunity to learn from two of Northern England’s most celebrated musicians, Emma Johnson and Sarah Heneghan.
Feedback from participants identified the enjoyment of “doing things I haven't done before”, and “how nice everyone is”, making for “a brilliant experience.”
Thanks are due to local partners Sheffield Jazz and Jazz at the Lescar for sponsoring the event, and to the Sheffield Music Hub for helping us to spread the word. We look forward to running a University of Sheffield Jazz Camp for Girls 2024 next spring!
