The representatives of IACMI - The Composite Institute visited The University of Sheffield on 5 March 2024 to support the development of the curriculum of their Metallurgical Engineering Trades Apprenticeship and Learning (METAL) programme focusing on developing a workforce in the casting and forging industries as a part of a robust, well-trained workforce across the US.
The team of three, Joannie Harmon, Mary Lucinda Curry and Codi Miley, visited the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre Training Centre, Factory 2050 and Energy Institute Translational Energy Research Centre. They were interested in the centres’ capabilities in metallic machining apprenticeships, and other Engineering Programmes associated with metal work and energy innovation respectively.
IACMI is one of 17 Manufacturing USA institutes created to help revitalise US manufacturing. The Institute connects those with innovative ideas with those who can help achieve their realisation. They lead the facilitating of these technology projects and developing the workforce able to carry them out. IACMI creates a network of organisations and promotes research and development programmes designed to reduce technical risk and develop a robust supply chain for the growing advanced composites industry.
The visiting delegation was impressed with the University of Sheffield’s research and innovation facilities and capabilities, and a wide range of apprenticeships. The Energy Institute, TERC and AMRC will work on future collaboration with IACMI - The Composite Institute.
