Who is it for?
This module is open to nurses who work in an emergency department and would benefit from enhancing their underpinning clinical knowledge in caring for the child/young person.
What is it about?
The module will enable students to further develop their skills in recognising, assessing and caring for children/ young people who have the potential to become acutely ill. Students will critically explore the specific pathophysiological problems experienced by the acutely ill child, and the knowledge necessary for the assessment and safe management. They will be supported to critically reflect upon the care given to the acutely ill child/young person through analysing the relevant theories that underpin practice.
The theory teaching for this module will be online, with students' own clinical area providing the required clinical exposure of caring for the child in the emergency department. This clinical exposure will enable the student to apply the taught theory back to their clinical practice.
How does it enhance practice?
The needs of the healthcare system are ever-changing, with acutely ill patients being seen in a variety of settings. Engagement with this module will enable the clinical practitioner to develop the underpinning knowledge and confidence to deliver the care required to the child in the emergency department as indicated by the Emergency Care Association and RCN National Curriculum and Competency Framework Emergency Nursing (Level 2).

Assessment for this module is by portfolio development.

Course structure
Attendance of the taught sessions is timetabled as one day per fortnight, for ten study days. In between the study days, students will be expected to gain clinical experience in caring for a child in the emergency department. There will be pre and post-study day work to be completed in the self-directed learning time.

Delivery site
The Division of Nursing and Midwifery (Health Science School) is based at Barber House, Glossop Road Sheffield: opposite the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
Teaching will take place online via the virtual learning platform.
