Tuesday 3 February 2026 - 2:30pm to 4:30pm
Description
In person only, open for University of Sheffield staff and students
About the film: Inspired by Henri Lefebvre’s idea of “the right to the city,” the film explores how grassroots movements in Rosario (Argentina), Santiago (Chile), and Belo Horizonte (Brazil) confront urban inequality. Through stories of struggle, hope, and collective action, “A Place in the City” invites us to rethink what it means to build community and claim space in the city. You can watch the trailer here.
About the film director: Gabriel Silvestre is a researcher and senior lecturer at Newcastle University in the UK. His work explores urban politics and social justice, and he has published widely in leading journals on urban studies and spatial planning. He recently co-edited the book Insurgent Planning Practice (Agenda Publishing, 2024). “A Place in the City” is his debut film.
This screening is the first of a Sheffield Urbanism film series - watch out for more offerings in due course! Sheffield Urbanism is an initiative of the Urban Institute to bring together a community of urban researchers working across the University of Sheffield and beyond.
