RURBANISE launch
RURBANISE is a 3.5-year project funded through the Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE), a joint research programme between the Canada International Research Development Centre (IDRC) and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). It is led by the Technical Assistance Movement for People and Environment, Inc. (TAMPEI), and includes 4 other partners in addition to The University of Sheffield - Urban Institute: Homeless People’s Federation Philippines, Inc. (HPFPI) through Philippine Action for Community-led Shelter Initiatives, Inc. (PACSII); Institute of Environmental Science for Social Change (ESSC); University of the Philippines Resilience Institute (UPRI) through the University of the Philippines Public Administration Foundation, Inc. (UPPAF);  and the University of the Philippines School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) through the Planning and Development Research Foundation, Inc. (PLANADES).

The project aims to strengthen effective responses for climate adaptation and resilience that acknowledge the life experiences and capacities of residents of informal settlements in the Philippines in a changing context of urbanization. RURBANISE works with the HPFPI and its partners to deliver inclusive, practical adaptation actions. The research programme will investigate the production of differential vulnerabilities in the context of rapid urbanization, the governance of urban resilience, and how to strengthen local adaptation capacities and knowledge.

As co-lead, Professor Vanesa Castán Broto is also responsible for second work package (WP2) on the governance context. WP2 will evaluate climate adaptation and risk management policies in institutions at the local, regional and national levels. Participatory assessments of the effectiveness of existing policies will show how current policies respond (or not) to the needs of the most disadvantaged groups.
