Description

The Gated City: Planning Practice and the Challenges of Urban Fragmentation in Mexico

This book launch is  being organised by the Urban Riches theme group, at the Urban Institute.

OVERVIEW The Gated City tells the story of the proliferation of gated communities and the connections between policies, social practices and urban fragmentation in Mexico. Drawing on ten years of academic research from Lomas de Angelópolis in Puebla, one of the largest gated communities in the world, the author explores the conditions that facilitate the production of such fortified spaces, which have proved popular with middle-class households. Weaving together the multiple influences of housing policy, predatory financial markets, and an increased fear of crime and violence. The book outlines how policymakers and planners can improve decision-making and provide non-gated solutions to urban anxiety.
