Description

This session will briefly explore how the endocrine system works, how blood glucose levels are regulated and share insights into one of the most common endocrine diseases - diabetes mellitus.

The endocrine system

Featuring content from our adult nursing degree, at this session you'll get involved in interactive tasks and chat with the nursing programme lead and current students about studying nursing at the University of Sheffield.

By the end of the session, you'll be able to:

  • Gain an insight on the endocrine system with a focus on the pancreatic islets
  • Describe the actions of insulin and glucagon
  • Explain how blood glucose levels are regulated 
  • Have an awareness of the common endocrine disorder- diabetes mellitus 

This session is suitable for students in years 12 and 13 and mature students.

It was a very positive experience and gave an insight to what the job looks like in the future and how you can use the qualification to specialise in certain areas. Tells you a lot about the facilities available and if it's suitable for you

Schedule

  • 4.15pm: Welcome
  • 4.30pm: Overview of the course
  • 4.45pm: Taster lecture
  • 5.05pm: Quiz on the endocrine system and diabetes mellitus
  • 4.55pm: Question and answer session with programme lead and current students
  • 5.45pm: End of session
