Why study biosciences?

  • Breadth - study the areas you're most passionate about with courses spanning the full spectrum of biology. We train students to solve some of the world's biggest challenges, from cancer, antimicrobial resistance and healthy ageing, to saving the planet’s biodiversity and mitigating climate change.
  • Options beyond the three-year BSc - our courses all come with options to gain additional experience beyond a three-year BSc. Add an extra year of research experience with an integrated masters, spend a year gaining work experience with a top employer, or apply to spend a year studying abroad.
  • 4th in the UK for research quality - the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 rated 98% of research and impact from the School of Biosciences as world-leading or internationally excellent.
  • Partnership with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals - our partnership with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals includes opportunities to contribute to the analysis of patient cancer samples with the Julia Garnham Centre.
  • Careers - our graduates enter the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and healthcare industries, conducting world-changing research, working within global conservation and providing ecological consultancy. Others apply their transferable skills in areas such as finance, teaching, human resources, IT and science communication.

Biochemistry

  • Accreditation - our undergraduate degrees in biochemistry are accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, with advanced accreditation for our integrated undergraduate masters programmes (MBiolSci).

Biological Sciences and Zoology

  • Field courses - we ensure that field work is built into your degree from the start. Explore Sheffield's green spaces, join regular visits to zoos and nature reserves, and take part in an optional field course to fascinating destinations from Anglesey to Borneo.

Zoology
