Spanish Translation Competition 2024

About the competition
Students of Spanish in Years 12 and 13 in the UK are invited to submit their translation into English of the original short Spanish text below.
About the Text
The following extract is from El padre de Blancanieves by Belén Gopegui (b. Madrid, 1963). Gopegui has published 9 novels since 1993 as well as short stories and essays, and has won two literary prizes, the Premio Tigre Juan and them Premio Iberoamericano Santiago del Nuevo Extremo. Text to Translate
Cuando mi mujer hizo el pedido al supermercado dijo que iba a estar en casa hasta las cuatro y preguntó si podían llevárselo antes de esa hora. Le dijeron que no había problema. A las cuatro y media el pedido no había llegado. Manuela esperó aún diez minutos más y se marchó. Regresó cerca de las ocho, llamó al supermercado para quejarse y reclamar el pedido pero allí le dijeron que ellos no lo tenían, que el pedido figuraba como entregado. A Manuela se le ocurrió preguntar a los vecinos: en efecto, el pedido estaba allí. Lo que hizo Manuela fue llamar al supermercado para comunicarlo y de paso quejarse de la falta de seriedad, no podía ser que se retrasaran y que luego lo dejaran en otro piso sin siquiera avisarla, con productos congelados que los vecinos no habían guardado por no saber lo que había. La mayoría de los congelados se habían echado a perder. En el supermercado le pideron disculpas asegurándole que algo así no iba a volver a pasar. Eso fue un viernes.
El sábado por la mañana yo fui a jugar al tenis como todos los sábados. Cuando volví encontré a Manuela llorando. Estaba sola. Susana habría ido a alguna de sus reuniones, Marcos tenía entrenamiento de voleibol y el pequeño pasaba el fin de semana con un amigo. Manuela me contó que a las diez habían llamado al timbre. Ella pensaba que sería yo por haberme olvidado algo y abrió la puerta sólo con la camiseta de dormir. El ecuatoriano le dijo que era el repartidor del supermarcado. Manuela respondió que ya tenía el pedido. Iba a cerrar la puerta pero el ecuatoriano se lo impidió:
‘No he venido por eso’, dijo. ‘Ayer usted hizo una llamada para quejarse, y me han despedido.’
The prize
The authors of the ten best entries will be invited to take part in a special Translation Workshop organized by the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Sheffield, involving academics from the School, MA students in Translation Studies and alumni who work in translation-related fields. The workshop will be held online in January 2025 (date to be confirmed). The authors of the three best entries will additionally each receive a prize of a £25 Amazon voucher.
The judges
The translations will be read and judged by a panel of experts from the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Sheffield.
How to enter
Please translate the text above into English. Please also append a brief note in English (roughly 100 words) describing how you dealt with a particularly intriguing challenge as you translated the text. This note will not be assessed, but we will post a selection of the most illuminating comments anonymously on this website after the winners are announced.
Entries must be submitted via the Competition Entry Form. You must complete the form and upload your entry via the link on the form or your entry may not be considered. Entries must be uploaded no later than 11:59pm GMT on Friday 29 November 2024.
Translations must be the original work of individual students. Only one entry per student is permitted.
Winners will be notified by Monday 16 December 2024.
A fair copy of the translation, based on the best entries, will be available on this website in January 2025. We regret that we cannot provide feedback on individual entries.
