Students of Russian in Years 12 and 13 in the UK are invited to submit their translation into English of the original short Russian text below.
About the Text
The text below is extracted from Il'ya Yashin, Soprotivlenie polezno (Izhevsk, Freedom Letters, 2023). Yashin (b. 1983) is a prominent opposition politician in Russia. A long-time associate of Boris Nemtsov and Aleksei Naval'nyi, he was a member of liberal-democratic political parties (Yabloko, then PARNAS) from the collapse of the Soviet Union to 2016 and has been arrested several times for participating in demonstrations against human rights violations by the Russian government. In December 2022 Yashin was sentenced to 8½ years in prison for his views on the killing of Ukrainian civilians in Bucha. He was deported from Russia in the prisoner exchange of August 2024. He regards his expulsion from Russia as illegal. Soprotivlenie polezno is a collection of writings about ‘politics in a country where there’s no politics left’. Долговязый парень, щурясь в темноте, заглядывает мне в лицо.
— Слушай, а ты ведь этот… ну как… Лев Яшин!
— Почти угадал.
— Точно! Я же тебя задерживал!
— ???
Бывший сержант полиции бодро рассказал, как участвовал в разгоне Форума независимых депутатов в марте 2021 года. Мы собрались тогда в комплексе «Измайлово», но почти сразу зал оцепили силовики, и больше сотни депутатов со всей России было арестовано.
— Помнишь, тебя в автобус грузили? Вот я как раз и принимал!
Радуется так, будто встретил старого друга. Впрочем, теперь мы по одну сторону решетки. Прошлой весной сержант выпил, проскочил на красный, и после столкновения с проезжавшей по шоссе машиной его «Мерседес» влетел в стену дома. Водитель был пристегнут и отделался сотрясением. А вот пассажир ремнем безопасности пренебрег, вылетел через лобовое и погиб на месте. Сержант получил 6 лет колонии.

В столыпинском вагоне напротив меня сидит старик. Скрючился, дымит папироской. Замечаю на пальцах расплывшиеся от времени наколки. Сидел уже, отец? Кивает. Из 62 лет жизни Михалыч 25 провел в лагерях. Самая долгая отсидка — с 1986 по 1998 годы. Все самое интересное пропустил, говорю. Дед смеется беззубым ртом. Да, мол, сел в одной стране, вышел в другой.
Сейчас он ждет очередной срок. Выпивал с соседом у себя в деревне. Слово за слово, взял полено и проломил ему голову. Тот умер.
— Не жалко?
Машет рукой и отворачивается.

В Кирове в наше купе заводят парня. Он бросает баул и протягивает руку: Василий. Сам из небольшого города, сел за драку с полицейским, собирается на войну. Отламываю ему кусок шоколада и спрашиваю, не боится ли погибнуть.
— Не, я везучий. На мотике дважды разбивался, все ничего…
Показывает шрамы на башке, доказывая свою живучесть. Ну хорошо, говорю, а сам убивать готов? Там люди свою землю защищают, а ты поедешь с оружием в чужую страну. Парень жмет плечами.
— Там ведь одни нацисты…
— С чего ты взял?
— По телеку показывали.
— Ты веришь телеку?
— Я что, дурак? По телеку одно вранье.
Вася беззаботно жует шоколад, а я пытаюсь переварить услышанное.
The prize
The authors of the ten best entries will be invited to take part in a special Translation Workshop organized by the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Sheffield, involving academics from the School, MA students in Translation Studies and alumni who work in translation-related fields. The workshop will be held online in January 2025 (date to be confirmed). The authors of the three best entries will additionally each receive a prize of a £25 Amazon voucher.
The judges
The translations will be read and judged by a panel of experts from the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Sheffield.
How to enter
Please translate the text above into English. Please also append a brief note in English (roughly 100 words) describing how you dealt with a particularly intriguing challenge as you translated the text. This note will not be assessed, but we will post a selection of the most illuminating comments anonymously on this website after the winners are announced.
Entries must be submitted via the Competition Entry Form. You must complete the form and upload your entry via the link on the form or your entry may not be considered. Entries must be uploaded no later than 11:59pm GMT on Friday 29 November 2024.
Translations must be the original work of individual students. Only one entry per student is permitted.
Winners will be notified by Monday 16 December 2024.
A fair copy of the translation, based on the best entries, will be available on this website in January 2025. We regret that we cannot provide feedback on individual entries.
