Profile

Siwen Lu is a Lecturer (Research and Teaching) of Translation Studies and Modern Languages at University of Sheffield, UK. She was a post-doc visiting researcher at University of Cambridge and University of Bristol before joining Sheffield. Her primary research interests include audiovisual translation (e.g. creative subtitling, online collaborative subtitling, fansubbing, non-professional subtitling), multimodality (e.g. multimodal discourse analysis and multimodality in translation) and digital media cultures. She has published articles in some of the leading peer-reviewed international journals, including The Journal of Specialised Translation, Babel: International Journal of Translation, New Media & Society, International Journal of Communication, Perspectives: Studies in Translation Theory and Practice, and Visual Communication. 

She is a member of The European Association for Studies in Screen Translation (ESIST) and the British Association of Chinese Studies (BACS). She is currently a co-editor for the upcoming edited volume on Danmu-mediated Communication and Audiovisual Translation to be published by Routledge. She also has rich peer-reviewing experience for international journals in the area of translation studies as well as media studies (e.g. Perspectives: Studies in Translation Theory and Practice, Babel: International Journal of Translation, International Journal of Communication, Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, and Humanities & Social Sciences Communications).

  • MSc in Specialised Translation (Audiovisual Pathway), University College London 
  • BA in English and Communication, University of Liverpool
Research interests
  • Audiovisual Translation: creative subtitling, online collaborative subtitling (e.g. fansubbing, danmu subtitling, non-professional subtitling), empirical research in audiovisual translation (e.g. eye-tracking experiment), translation technologies, media accessibility.
  • Multimodality: multimodal discourse analysis, intermodal relations, multimodality in translation.
  • Digital media culture: social media platforms, participatory culture, citizen media, internet cultures, informal media cultures.

Siwen would be keen to supervise PGR students in the areas of audiovisual translation and multimodality in translation.
