German Translation Competition 2024

Students of German in Years 12 and 13 in the UK are invited to submit their translation into English of the original short German text below.
About the Text
Verlassene Nester (Stuttgart: Klett-Cotta, 2024) is Patricia Hempel’s second novel, her first being Metrofolklore (2020). 13-year-old Pilly’s search for belonging, acceptance and love plays out in the family and political tensions of a small town on the River Elbe just after German reunification. Hempel is a founding member of PEN Berlin and sits on the editorial board of the queer literary journal Glitter; Verlassene Nester was nominated for the 2023 Alfred Döblin Prize.
Text to Translate
Kein Fisch war besser in der Gegend. Früher standen die Leute im »Hexengarten« Schlange und drängten sich mit ihren Kühltaschen bis an den Steg. […] Nachdem Gutachter aus dem Westen die Wasserqualität in Elis Angelbucht als »ausreichend bedenklich« eingestuft hatten und mit dem Verbraucherschutz drohten, blieb die Verkaufslade auch zur Hauptsaison geschlossen. Im Auftrag des Umweltbundesamtes gab es regelmäßige Stichproben am Steg, und das verhängte Verkaufsverbot hatte sich schneller herumgesprochen, als die Öfen sich befüllten. Alle Vierteljahre betrat jemand mit Klemmbrett unbefugt das Grundstück. Eli war sich sicher, dass den Eindringlingen das Elbwasser schnurzegal war und es nur darum ging, kleine Betriebe wie ihren kaputtzumachen. Fisch für alle gab es jetzt im neuen Supermarkt, aus Ländern, die in Katharinas Schulatlas aus guten Gründen gar nicht erst erwähnt wurden. Gefälligst kaufen sollten die Leute, das füllte die Staatskasse schneller als Rotbarsch und Neujahrskarpfen aus irgendeiner Kanalbude.
Frischen Elbfisch gab es noch immer, auch das Brötchen zum Mitnehmen, allerdings nur unter der Ladentheke. Diejenigen, die trotz Verkaufsverbot kamen, waren die festen Leute. Sie brauchten keine neuen Kaufhallen und schon gar nicht eine neue Zeit. […]
»Schlimmer wie die Stasi«, flüsterte Katharina mit Blick aus dem Fenster und hängte den letzten Fisch in den Rauch. […]
Es klopfte an der Tür. Zweimal lang, dreimal kurz, einmal lang. Genosse Bergmann kannte das Klopfzeichen, das die Hintertür der Fischbude öffnete, ob eingeladen oder nicht. Wer sich verklopfte oder die Reihenfolge nicht einhielt, blieb draußen.
»Dir schlackert ja schon die Uniform! Das müssen wir ändern! Komm schnell rein!« Eli ließ Bergmann eintreten und winkte einem Mann zu, der die Trauerweide neben dem Anlegesteg besprühte.
»Der Duft von besseren Zeiten«, sagte Bergmann und begutachtete die Öfen am hinteren Ende der Bude. »Was habt ihr denn Schönes für mich?«
Katharina schwärmte von den Barben. Viele Gräten, aber im Geschmack mal etwas anderes.
The prize
The authors of the ten best entries will be invited to take part in a special Translation Workshop organized by the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Sheffield, involving academics from the School, MA students in Translation Studies and alumni who work in translation-related fields. The workshop will be held online in January 2025 (date to be confirmed). The authors of the three best entries will additionally each receive a prize of a £25 Amazon voucher.
The judges
The translations will be read and judged by a panel of experts from the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Sheffield.
How to enter
Please translate the text above into English. Please also append a brief note in English (roughly 100 words) describing how you dealt with a particularly intriguing challenge as you translated the text. This note will not be assessed, but we will post a selection of the most illuminating comments anonymously on this website after the winners are announced.
Entries must be submitted via the Competition Entry Form. You must complete the form and upload your entry via the link on the form or your entry may not be considered. Entries must be uploaded no later than 11:59pm GMT on Friday 29 November 2024.
Translations must be the original work of individual students. Only one entry per student is permitted.
Winners will be notified by Monday 16 December 2024.
A fair copy of the translation, based on the best entries, will be available on this website in January 2025. We regret that we cannot provide feedback on individual entries.
