Get home safe

Whether you’re travelling home after work, a late night study session or night out, make sure you get home safely.

Stay aware

  • Check who’s around you before using your phone
  • If listening to music - turn it down or off to hear better
  • Stay in well-lit, busier areas
  • Consider carrying a personal alarm

Travel together

  • Travel with friends or take public transport, if possible.

Check in

  • Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be home.
  • Share your location with someone you trust, or use the SafeZone check in feature for extra reassurance.

If you need help

  • If you feel threatened, run towards a well-lit public place
  • If you, or someone else is in immediate danger: call 999
  • You can also call University Security on 0114 222 4444, or use the SafeZone app to access emergency, first aid or non-urgent help.

Pay for a taxi with your student card

If you don't have enough money for a taxi, you can use your student UCard as temporary payment with Veezu Taxis:

  • Call Veezu Taxis on 0114 239 3939.
  • Ask to use ‘Veezu Safe Rides’.
  • Give the driver your UCard.
  • Pay for your taxi when you collect your UCard from the Students’ Union Welcome Desk.

Take the Safety Bus

The Safety Bus runs during and after every late-night event at the Students’ Union

  • The bus stops by the Hicks building. Please speak to a member of staff for assistance.
  • Travel from the SU directly to your door (up to two miles away) free of charge.

Find free charging points in the library and Students’ Union:

  • Information Commons: Ground Floor
  • Western Bank Library: Level 4 and Level 5
  • The Health Sciences Library: By the printers
  • Students Union: Venue cloakrooms, Welcome Desk

Make a report

  • If you experience or witness anything that causes concern, you can report it to the police and to University security.
  • You can also use the Report and Support service to report concerns anonymously, or with your contact details, about bullying, harassment, discrimination or sexual misconduct you have experienced or witnessed at the University.
  • If you tell us about your experience via Report and Support, you will receive confidential support, signposting to relevant services and information about the next steps so that you can make informed decisions.
  • You can also report a hate crime online without visiting a police station at www.report-it.org.uk.
