Research interests

Her thesis examined cultural education through translation, and she maintains research interests in this area. She also has experience and interests in teacher training and the promotion of Korean language learning outside Korea.

Teaching interests

She believes that every language class is an opportunity for intercultural exchange. In teaching Korean, she is helping students to discover what is unique about Korean culture and inviting them to interpret it in relation to their own cultures. With this in mind, she tries to ensure that the content of her classes is topical and up to date. She also takes an evidence-based approach to teaching, planning her lessons in the first instance in response to students’ demonstrable needs and interests, but also with reference to contemporary research into language learning pedagogy. While she values communicative approaches, she also thinks it is essential to equip students with enough language knowledge and awareness to optimize such approaches. She is very conscious that every learner is different, and therefore seeks to offer differentiated support throughout her classes. Overall, she hopes that her classes are occasions for discovery and reflection, helping students to develop the confidence, competence, and curiosity needed to thrive in a Korean-language environment.
