Dan Walsh

Dan Walsh is a banjo player, guitarist and singer. He was described as 'one of the banjo's true innovators' by the American magazine Banjo Newsletter and has been nominated as best musician at the BBC Folk Awards. He plays banjo in clawhammer style, traditionally associated with American old time music but his unique and complex approach to the style has seen him cover a wide range of styles.

His specialities are Irish and Scottish folk music and American bluegrass but his wide ranging approach has seen him play a wide variety of music both solo, as part of the award winning Urban Folk Quartet and in different collaborations. This has including forays into jazz, funk, blues, Eastern European folk music and Indian classical and folk musics.

Walsh has recorded four albums and is an in demand performer with a hectic touring schedule in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and throughout Europe. He is also greatly in demand as a teacher and is the only international banjoist to be invited to teach at the Midwest Banjo Camp in the USA. He also teaches at Newcastle and Sheffield universities. Dan also retains a passion for outreach work and has performed throughout the UK in hospices, hospitals, special schools and care homes with a particular interest in the impact of music on people suffering from dementia.
