University of Sheffield ranked one of the top institutions in the UK to study Music

The Department of Music is celebrating league table success for their undergraduate programmes - being ranked 3rd in the UK to study Music in 2024.

University league tables compare higher education institutions in the UK. They provide statistical insights to guide students to choose the best University for undergraduate study in their chosen subject. 

The Department of Music is delighted to share the following summary of results, ranking the University of Sheffield as one of the top institutions in the UK to study Music in 2024.

The brilliant set of results recognises the outstanding research and teaching carried out by academic staff on the undergraduate programme, resulting in world-leading collaborations across a range of music disciplines, including music psychology, musicology, composition, ethnomusicology, music industries and performance studies.

Importantly, the league tables factor in the current student satisfaction rates, measuring teaching, feedback and student to staff ratio. Recognition also goes to the team of professional service staff based in the Department of Music that provide a high standard of admissions, wellbeing, creative and module related support to students throughout their degree.

The six undergraduate single and dual honours programmes offered by the Department of Music allow students to study a diverse and flexible range of modules which cover a variety of musical genres. The Department is well-connected to industry partners, providing creative experiences to help students establish a professional career in Music.

 The Department of Music is part of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, collaborating with the Departments of History, English, Modern Languages and Cultures, Philosophy and East Asian Studies.

The Faculty plays a major role in making the University of Sheffield a world-class research institution and has been ranked 74th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2024. 

The QS World University Rankings by Subject are compiled annually to help prospective students identify and compare the world’s leading universities in a particular subject.

International scholarships

We offer a generous package of financial support for international students, including undergraduate and postgraduate taught scholarships worth £10,000 towards the annual tuition fee.

Applications are open for existing offer holders for programmes starting in autumn 2025.
