MLT210 Arabic Post-Beginner 2
Based on 36 hours of small group interactive seminars and tutorials predominantly delivered in Arabic, the unit also comprises 64 hours of monitored private study.

- Contact times: 3 hours per week over 12 weeks, starting in Week 1 of the semester, and including a two-hour class and a one-hour lab session. Contact time may be reduced to 2 hours per week if fewer than 8 students are enrolled on the course.

Assuming successful completion of the Post-Beginner 1 unit or equivalent, this unit aims to consolidate and expand the linguistic and cultural skills required to cope with an extended range of mostly predictable, everyday communicative situations encountered when interacting orally and in writing with native speakers during, for instance, a short visit abroad.
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- perform at Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
- understand phrases and high frequency vocabulary related to areas of personal relevance (e.g. personal and family information, shopping, local area, employment), and catch the main point in short, clear messages and announcements
- find specific, predictable information in simpler everyday material such as advertisements, prospectuses, menus and timetables, and understand short simple personal letters recognising complex structures such as imperative, noun cases and the jussive
- communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities, and handle short social exchanges when prompted, describing in simple terms their family and other people, living conditions, their educational background and their present or most recent job
- write notes, messages and short personal letters or emails relating to matters in areas of immediate need, requesting or providing information as appropriate
- demonstrate an insight into the most common aspects of the culture and everyday life in areas where the language is spoken so as to respond appropriately when interacting with native speakers in simple situations
- demonstrate a practical understanding of grammar terminology and an ability to study the language by themselves, using tools such as the Word Wide Web or a dictionary and developing techniques for the acquisition and retention of new language
- demonstrate awareness in a number of transferable skills such as IT skills, presenting information, handling unexpected communicative situations, taking intercultural differences and language barriers into account, learning independently, etc.
