On 11 January 2020, HMA Mr John Marshall, British Ambassador to Luxembourg, joined the ‘Luxembourgish Language and Culture’ seminar. He shared his experiences of working in the Diplomatic Service and discussed the importance of and benefits that a Modern Languages degree has had on his professional and personal life. Ambassador Marshall also engaged in a lively Q&A session with students, who were keen to learn more about his career as an Ambassador and life in Luxembourg.
I found the discussion with John Marshall really beneficial. It was really interesting to see first hand the roads that learning languages at university can take you and how diverse these roads are. Learning a language opens up so many opportunities and talking with John Marshall has made me really excited about what the future could bring.
I found it really interesting to see the way in which politics and Luxembourg intersect, especially the way in which learning the language helps with integration, and how this is done through interactions that you have with locals which you wouldn’t normally have without knowing the local language.
I thought the talk with John Marshall was very informative. He provided excellent insight into a line of work that I previously knew little about.
