Why study Russian?

Russian is spoken by 250 million people in the world. It’s a distant cousin of English, a relative of Slavonic languages like Czech and Polish, and a gateway to diverse cultures and career paths.

Languages for All

Our Russian modules are open to all students (for credits or not), members of staff, and members of the public.

Available on an academic year or semester basis, they aim to develop language competence and cultural knowledge for professional and recreational purposes through small group weekly classes and guided independent learning.

Levels

If you are unsure about your level, let us know when applying and we will invite you for a short interview to understand your previous experience and current needs.

Beginner

Choose this level if you are a complete beginner, have learnt some vocabulary with Duolingo, or studied the language during secondary school (pre-GCSE) but have not engaged with the language since then.

Intermediate

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Beginner, have a GCSE grades 7-9, an equivalent qualification, or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

Advanced

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Intermediate, have an A level grade A-C, an equivalent qualification, or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

Higher Advanced

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Advanced or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

Proficient

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Higher Advanced or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

Degrees with Russian

Undergraduate students who study Russian as part of their BA in Modern Languages and Cultures degree with the School of Languages, Arts and Societies will take the following modules. There are two distinct pathways, depending on whether you are studying Russian ab initio or post A-Level.

They are intended to build your proficiency in Russian over the years up to a near-native speaker level, taking into account any previous experience of the language you may have, whilst supporting your study of Russian culture in other modules.
