Why French?

The French language is spoken by 270 million people worldwide – from arctic Canada, through Europe and Africa, to the islands of the South Pacific.

Languages for All

Our French modules are open to all students (for credits or not), members of staff, and members of the public.

Available on an academic year or semester basis, they aim to develop language competence and cultural knowledge for professional and recreational purposes through small group weekly classes and guided independent learning.

Levels

If you are unsure about your level, let us know when applying and we will invite you for a short interview to understand your previous experience and current needs.

Beginner

Choose this level if you are a complete beginner, have learnt some vocabulary with Duolingo, or studied the language during secondary school (pre-GCSE) but have not engaged with the language since then.

Post-Beginner

Choose this level if you have a recent GCSE grade 6 or below or a higher GCSE grade from over five years ago.

Intermediate

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Beginner or Post-Beginner, have a GCSE grades 7-9, an equivalent qualification, or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

Higher Intermediate

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Intermediate, an AS level Grades A-C, an A level below Grade C, an equivalent qualification, or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

Advanced

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Higher Intermediate, an A level grade A-C, an equivalent qualification, or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

Higher Advanced

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Advanced or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

Proficient

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Higher Advanced or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

Degrees with French

Undergraduate students who study French as part of their BA in Modern Languages and Cultures degree with the School of Languages, Arts and Societies will take the following modules. There are 2 distinct pathways, depending on whether you are studying French ab initio or post A-Level.

They are intended to build your proficiency in French over the years, taking into account any previous experience of the language you may have, whilst supporting your study of French culture in other modules.
