Why study Czech?

Czech is the language of a dynamic country in the heart of Europe where the history of the East meets the contemporary West. Its literature, film, history, and sport make it a rewarding language to learn.

Languages for All

Our Czech modules are open to all students (for credits or not), members of staff, and members of the public.

Available on an academic year or semester basis, they aim to develop language competence and cultural knowledge for professional and recreational purposes through small group weekly classes and guided independent learning.

Levels

If you are unsure about your level, let us know when applying and we will invite you for a short interview to understand your previous experience and current needs.

Beginner

Choose this level if you are a complete beginner, have learnt some vocabulary with Duolingo, or studied the language during secondary school (pre-GCSE) but have not engaged with the language since then.

• Academic year: LAS1113 Czech Beginner (20 credits)
• Autumn: LAS160 Czech Beginner 1 (10 credits)
• Spring: LAS152 Czech Beginner 2 (10 credits)

Intermediate

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Beginner, have a GCSE grades 7-9, an equivalent qualification, or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

• Academic year: LAS2167 Czech Intermediate (20 credits)
• Autumn: LAS2132 Czech Intermediate 1 (10 credits)
• Spring: LAS281 Czech Intermediate 2 (10 credits)

Proficient

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Intermediate or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

• Academic year: LAS3122 Czech Proficient (20 credits)
• Autumn: LAS3102 Czech Proficient 1 (10 credits)
• Spring: LAS3104 Czech Proficient 2 (10 credits)

Degrees with Czech

Undergraduate students who study Czech as part of their BA in Modern Languages and Cultures degree with the School of Languages, Arts and Societies will take the following modules.

They are intended to build proficiency in Czech over the years, taking into account any previous experience of the language you may have, whilst supporting the study of Czech culture in other modules.
