Languages for All

Our Chinese modules are open to all students (for credits or not), members of staff, and members of the public.

Available on an academic year or semester basis, they aim to develop language competence and cultural knowledge for professional and recreational purposes through small group weekly classes and guided independent learning.

Levels

We offer Chinese language modules at three different levels: Beginner, Post-beginner and Intermediate. Find out about the modules we offer and choose the course that's right for you. 

If you are unsure about your level, let us know when applying and we will invite you for a short interview to understand your previous experience and current needs.

Beginner

Choose this level if you have no previous experience of learning the language.

• Academic year: LAS1141 Chinese 1 (20 credits)
• Autumn: LAS108 Chinese for Non-Specialists I (10 credits)
• Spring: LAS109 Chinese for Non-Specialists II (10 credits)

Post-beginner

You have some basic experience of learning the language and aren't a complete beginner.

• Autumn: LAS215 Chinese for Non-Specialists III (10 credits)
• Spring: LAS216 Chinese for Non-Specialists IV (10 credits)

Intermediate

You have studied the language for one to two years, possibly have (the equivalent of) a good GCSE, and can interact with 'friendly' native speakers in common, expected situations.

• Spring: LAS304 Chinese for Non-Specialists VI (10 credits)

Degrees with Chinese

Undergraduate students who take a Chinese specialism as part of their degree with the School of Languages, Arts and Societies will take the following modules.

The language modules are intended to build your proficiency in Chinese over the years, taking into account any previous experience of the language you may have, whilst supporting your study of Chinese culture in other modules.

Year 1

• Spring: LAS118 Chinese Intensive 1b (20 credits)
• Academic year: LAS1131 Chinese Intensive 1c (20 credits)

Year 2

Autumn:

• LAS219 Chinese Language 3A (20 credits)
• LAS208 Chinese Language 3B (10 credits)

Spring:

• LAS220 Chinese Language 4A (20 credits)
• LAS209 Chinese Language 4B (10 credits)

Year 3

• Autumn: LAS325 Chinese Language 5 (20 credits)
