Hannah is HR Manager: HR Business Services. She joined the University in 2010 as an HR Assistant
What first attracted you to join the University of Sheffield?
The University is a huge employer in Sheffield and working for such a large organisation appealed to me for my professional development, as I would get the breadth of knowledge needed when starting my career in HR. From my initial research it was clear that the University supported their staff and offered great benefits.
What do you enjoy most about working at the University of Sheffield?
The people, it sounds like a cliché but I work with such amazing and supportive colleagues. In HR we are fairly big department but every single person will help you and work collaboratively to deliver projects. I have also been very fortunate to develop here, starting out as a HR Assistant and progressing to an HR Manger.
What do you enjoy about working in the department?
I am lucky to line manager and work with colleagues who are hard working and willing to help where needed. My role has a wide remit which means every day is different and allows me to work with colleagues across the Department and also the wider University.
Do you have any favourite memories from working at the University of Sheffield?
Yes there are lots, but my number one is when I came out to the Department and how supportive every single person was and has been ever since. I am 100% myself at work and that will always feel amazing
Did you move to Sheffield from another area?
No, I am originally from Sheffield but have lived in different places. I have now moved away from Sheffield but still choose to work here as its such a fantastic place to work.
How would you describe the experience of moving here to work and live somewhere else?
I am lucky that hybrid working applies to my role which allows me to engage and collaborate with colleagues both in person and online
What’s your favourite thing about Sheffield as a city?
Easy, Sheffield Wednesday. Away from football its how friendly and down to earth people are, no matter who you are talking to everyone is welcoming and supportive
What would you say to someone who was considering the University as a place to work?
Do it. I have worked here for 13 years and wouldn't change a thing. The HR Department is great and so is the wider University. There are so many opportunities for development, as well as great benefits. You will have job satisfaction daily and not regret your decision .
