This is the best decision I have ever made!
My first impression of Sheffield was that it is WORLD CLASS. Simply because of the amazing facilities of the university and also the people were extremely polite, friendly and helpful.
The diverse international community that exists here is really welcoming so going out to social events and feeling at home is very easy. There are also lots activities to do in Sheffield from bowling, football, rock climbing, ice skating and even hiking! The Peak District is very close to Sheffield and coming from a city that had a national park (Nairobi) I knew that this would be an added advantage to go and de-stress in Nature. The area is quite hilly and I love walking around to get a good view of Sheffield! Getting around is really easy with buses and trams and there are even discounted tickets for University students.
It is a very student friendly city in the sense that I can easily get around and explore the city and enjoy my life in Sheffield. I feel that my studying has improved at the University for the simple reason that there is so much support available and the facilities are out of this world.
In terms of contact hours, all the hours spent in the University, I learn something totally new and that’s what higher education is all about! In terms of self-study, I am able to work effectively with the help of the technology/software provided by the University - it enables me to go over what we learnt in lectures. The facilities such as the Information Commons, Engineering Heart Space and the Diamond also provide access to the best facilities for studying. I truly enjoy it!
The way studies take place here, from detailed lectures with highly qualified lecturers, to learning in labs and gaining practical skills on what you’ve learnt in lectures. Using projects to apply what you’ve learnt altogether and at the same time developing skills such as team working, event planning, project management and leadership. The University of Sheffield really does give you ALL the experiences you need to develop yourself and your career.
Definitely consider Sheffield, research more about it and you will fall in love with the city and the University. In my opinion there is no better place to live as a student than Sheffield as it has the right pace and the University is a cut above the rest regardless of your course. You’ll be welcomed into a large international community of students and you will feel at home very quickly!
