Professor Robert Stern joined the Philosophy Department in Sheffield in 1989 where he stayed until he retired (on grounds of ill-health) in 2023. He played an enormous part in the life of the department over that time, and was much loved and respected by colleagues, students and visitors, as well as sustaining an international reputation as a leading scholar in the history of nineteenth century philosophy in particular.

We have set up this page to share some links with interviews, videos and other pages of interest, and as a place for people to share their memories of Bob. We invite you to complete this Google Form, or email r.keefe@sheffield.ac.uk, if you would like to contribute, whether you are an ex-student or colleague, or knew Bob in other ways through the Philosophy world.

You can find our original notice here.

Conferences for Bob

Bob joined us at two excellent events celebrating Bob’s distinguished career in 2024:

A one-day conference in his honour in March and a two-day EJP Symposium in May.

Recordings from the latter are available here. And recordings and photos from the former will soon be available here.

Philosophy Rocks

Bob first conceived “Philosophy Rocks”, an annual informal concert for staff, students and their friends and families, in 2012 and lovingly organised the annual event every year thereafter.

Here’s an original performance of a song about Bob by Joe Saunders and Charlie Crear, performed at “Philosophy Rocks”, 2015
