Why did you choose to study at Sheffield?
Sheffield is an amazing city and close to where I live, which is what attracted me to the uni in the first place. On a visit to the uni I could really see how much students love the city and the uni. History student specifically were enthusiastic and welcoming and the staff were approachable and friendly!
Has your experience so far been what you expected?
In first year the jump from a levels to university style of teaching was quite big however first year modules support you in making this jump. It took me a while to find my feet in seminars however once you do, you find the experience is so enjoyable.
What do you particularly enjoy about your degree programme?
The modules I have done in second year have been varied in content and the choice for second year modules is so varied! As you have to pick at least one module from different time periods, the course has been varied and interesting and has allowed to me to study topics I have never had the to chance to.
What modules are you studying this year? Are there any modules that you have particularly enjoyed during your degree so far and why?
This semester my two chosen modules are on the Israeli-arab conflict and nationality and identity in soviet Russia. Both are controversial but interesting topics which is why seminar debates and discussions are so important in clarifying and challenging readings or lecture content. Lecturers and seminar tutors are enthusiastic about their subjects which makes the content enjoyable and easier to understand.
If you’ve undertaken any extra-curricular activities, what do you feel these have added to your time here?
As a member of the history society I am becoming more involved next year in the role of treasurer. History society is fun and a great way to meet other history students outside of uni and I can't wait to become more involved in the planning and organising of the socials.
What do you like about the University/living in Sheffield?
Sheffield is an amazing city with the perfect balance between city life and nature. Compared to Leeds or Manchester Sheffield is more compact but still so full of things to do, with a load of great pubs to have a drink at after uni!
Would you recommend studying at Sheffield to a friend?
Absolutely!
