My years in Sheffield and Germany

Sandeep Kaur looks back on her four years of studying German: "There is a high demand for German speakers".

"My final year at University has been amazing. The teachers at the German department have been super supportive, whether I had questions about my modules or university life in general. The department offers great courses on German culture, literature, philosophy and so on, besides the language course. All these modules gave me the opportunity to improve my skills in the language and get a job as an immigration coordinator, even before graduation. There is high demand for German speakers worldwide, and learning German at the University of Sheffield is a great opportunity career-wise.

However much I enjoyed my years in Sheffield, I have to admit that my Third Year Abroad was, without a shadow of a doubt, the best year of my university life. You get to spend time away from home, making new friends, finding new places and you get to pick what you want to do; whether that’s working, studying or volunteering abroad. It’s the chance where you can learn from others’ trial and errors, and make it pretty much spectacular.

On the weekends, I met with friends: Heidelberg is a student city, so it is very easy to make friends and meet people from everywhere.

BA Modern Languages (German, French, Spanish)

I did Modern Languages (French, Spanish and German) and for my German-language semester abroad, I studied at the University of Heidelberg. I have definitely had the best experience of my life, even if my year abroad happened during the Covid19 pandemic. Heidelberg is beautiful. I have absolutely made the best choice in going there. There is so much to do in the city. It is also very easy to travel to nearby cities, such as Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Freiburg. The weather has been very good, though I would recommend taking some heavy clothing too (it does rain quite a lot from April till Mid- June). On the weekends, I met with friends: Heidelberg is a student city, so it is very easy to make friends and meet people from everywhere. The University Sport sessions are excellent. I would highly recommend Heidelberg, because it is a great place not only for improving your German skills, but also  meeting new students from all over the world."
