Anis – Mechatronics & Robotics

I'm Anis, a Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering student currently on my placement year. As an international student from Algeria, my journey at Sheffield has been defined by the opportunities provided through the Diamond.

I've been Avionics Lead for Project SunSat and a Telemetry Engineer for Project SunRide – two ambitious extracurricular engineering teams that made extensive use of the Diamond facilities. When I first arrived, I had theoretical knowledge but lacked the confidence to tackle real-world engineering challenges.

My breakthrough project was designing and building a robotic car with a robotic arm from scratch. We started in the Diamond's computer labs using CAD software to model our design, then moved to the EEE laboratories where we had dedicated workstations and access to components and soldering tools. I trained in laser cutting and 3D printing at the iForge to manufacture custom parts, and finally validated our design in the robot arena. I programmed the robotic arm's motion in C++ and designed the power distribution system to keep everything stable under load. Beyond the technical challenges, this project tested my ability to problem-solve under pressure and communicate ideas clearly. It showed me how the Diamond supports taking ideas from concept to reality.

Building on that foundation, I've tackled even more ambitious projects. As Avionics Lead for Project SunSat, I guided a team designing electronics for a small satellite system competing internationally, creating a multi-layer PCB that integrates power regulation, sensors, telemetry, and control systems. For Project SunRide, I developed an innovative radio direction-finding system for rocket recovery using Doppler shift analysis. These experiences didn't just develop my technical skills – they gave me tangible achievements that strengthened my CV and helped me secure my placement. I could speak confidently in interviews about leading satellite teams and building robots from scratch. The Diamond hasn't just been a place to study – it's been a launchpad for innovation and career development.
