I am clinical academic restorative dentist with a keen interest in the pursuit of all aspects of pedagogic, research and clinical domains of my discipline.
As Head of the Academic Unit of Restorative Dentistry and Director of the Postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical Restorative Dentistry, I hold responsibility for the leadership and management of the undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching. In my additional capacity as Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, I provide specialist patient care in fixed and removable prosthodontics, endodontics and general restorative dentistry.
I actively lead and participate in the pursuit of high-quality research with significant outputs in the form of grant income and high impact publications in peer-reviewed journals.

My research interests span all aspects of restorative dentistry, with a focus in prosthodontics and endodontics, in the following three domains:
- Clinical performance & clinical evaluation studies: The rehabilitation of the compromised dentition with innovative materials and techniques with a focus on the optimisation of the structural integrity of compound restored systems using mechanical (static & dynamic-fatigue) testing, computational modelling, Finite Element Analysis and clinical studies.
- Pedagogy: Development and optimisation of learning and teaching modalities, with a focus on Virtual Reality Simulation and student learning of operative skills.
- Sustainability in Dentistry: The environmental impact of restorative materials and single-use plastics in dentistry; remote clinical consultations (tele-dentistry) using super-fast broadband communication and embedding ‘sustainability’ in undergraduate curricula.

Undergraduate BDS
Jointly with my clinical and academic colleagues we lead, manage and deliver the Clinical Restorative curriculum for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery course across the three disciplines of Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics.
We are proud to deliver a very dynamic programme that is continuously exploring novel and better ways of optimising and improving our student’s learning experience. We do this, in response to feedback from our internal quality assurance process, to advances in L&T techniques (E.g.: Virtual simulation), to advances in knowledge, to changes in curriculum policy and content.
As Head of Academic Unit of Restorative Dentistry, I have overall responsibility for ensuring the effective strategic direction and the day-to-day delivery of the undergraduate BDS in restorative dentistry.
Postgraduate - DClinDent
Doctorate Programmes in Clinical Dentistry: Endodontics, Periodontics & Prosthodontics
I am the Programme Director for this 3 Year, full-time clinical programme, that consists of three courses in each of the restorative mono-specialties with a con-joint exit degree of DClinDent and Membership RCSEd in the chosen discipline of Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics.
The three courses that constitute the DClinDent Programme are:
- DClinDent Endodontics – Led by Mr Mark Barber
- DClinDent Periodontics – Led by Dr. Keyvan Moharamzadeh
- DClinDent Prosthodontics – Led by Dr. James Field
These unique clinical courses are mapped to the specialty curricular set by the General Dental Council and will develop the knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes to enable independent practice of the specialty to the highest standards. The three separate courses are designed with distinct crossover learning opportunities to ensure appreciation of the specialty within the broader context of the practice of restorative dentistry. Learning is supported by cutting edge educational techniques and facilities under the leadership of specialist clinicians in the subjects.
The programme has been recognised and approved by RCSEdinburgh as appropriate training for eligibility to sit the MRD RCSEd examination upon successful completion of the 3 years of study. This can be done as either a con-joint or independent examination.

- Lead for the Virtual Reality Simulation facility in the School of Clinical Dentistry.
- Faculty representative for the Health and Human-Interventional Studies Research Governance Sub-Committee - (School of Nursing and Midwifery or School of Clinical Dentistry) University of Sheffield.
Clinical
- My interests are in the specialties of endondontics, prosthodontics, and the overall restorative management of patients. As such, I am registered on the GDC Specialists of Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics and Prosthodontics.
- I contribute actively to all NHS-related activities and the NHS-led StR training programme in Restorative Dentistry. In this capacity, I am a clinical and educational supervisor to the StR training programme.
- I undertake service-improvement research and actively contribute to clinical service and governance activities.
