Profile

I completed my PhD in 2008 in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. After a short period as a Post-doctoral Research Associate, I was appointed Lecturer in Human Anatomy in 2010. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2019.

My research group focuses on the role of extracellular vesicles in head and neck cancer progression. A better understanding of these nano-sized particles may one day lead to novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for head and neck cancer.

Research interests

My research interests include:

  • the biogenesis of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in head and neck cancer;
  • the interplay between EVs and the tumour microenvironment;
  • the role of EVs in chemotherapy resistance;
  • and the use of salivary EVs as a source of diagnostic biomarkers.

Teaching activities

I am the Theme Leader for Human Body theme and anatomy sub-theme leader for the Oral Cavity in Health and Disease theme. I deliver human anatomy lectures for first-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students and I lead head and neck anatomy practical classes for 1st year BDS students. I also am a member of the first BDS Working Party, where I respond to student feedback on anatomy teaching and oversee resulting changes/improvements based on feedback.

Professional activities and memberships
  • Chair of Committee for the Use of Tissue in Teaching (CUTIT)
  • Human Tissue Authority ‘Person Designated’ for Medical Teaching Unit
  • UK Society for Extracellular Vesicles (UKEV) Committee member
