The finalists, all representing the University’s Faculty of Engineering, utilised the DIZ’s state-of-the-art equipment and the hands-on skills they’ve developed within the collaborative facility to design, programme, and demonstrate their automation solutions.
Putting their knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) to the test, the students used Siemens Solid Edge software and 3D printing technology to fabricate unique components and obstacles. They then meticulously programmed the robotic arms to execute the precise movements required.
The finalists’ technical expertise was matched only by their creativity. The designed courses ranged from a Harry Potter inspired obstacle course to a SpongeBob SquarePants one!
Supported by Siemens, the competition featured a total prize pot of £1,000, awarded to the top three teams.

About the Digital Innovation Zone
The DIZ, a global-first facility developed in partnership with Siemens, is uniquely run by an undergraduate student team. Operating as a 'living lab,' it allows students to master cutting-edge technologies—from edge computing to digital twin simulation—and apply them directly to industry-relevant challenges.
Located in the Heartspace of the University’s iconic Mappin Building, the DIZ provides students with seamless access to advanced equipment, supported by Siemens engineers and a dedicated team of student Digital Advisors.
