Care and Tech

The CIRCLE Care and Tech Group is a collaborative space led by University of Sheffield researchers, with the aim of working alongside practitioners and community partners. We bring together expertise across computing, design, disability, medicine, social sciences, policy, practice and lived experience of care.

Together, we want to explore if and how technology can support more equitable, sustainable, and rewarding approaches to care.

What we do:

  • Share ideas and shape projects - from early discussions through to grant applications
  • Bridge differences across sectors - recognising and working with different discipline-specific language, values, and expectations
  • Provide a supportive network for those new to this work, with the help of those more established
  • Address behind-the-scenes institutional barriers that can slow down collaboration

What we value

  • Critical reflection on the role of technology in care
  • Lived experience as expertise
  • Bringing attention to the invisible work behind care and service improvement (which is often overlooked when the focus is solely on innovation).

Co-leads

How to get involved:

We welcome researchers, practitioners, and community partners interested in the intersections of care and technology. Contact one of our co-leads to learn more, come to a meeting, or explore collaboration opportunities.

Projects

AI and Digital Care for Chronic Conditions

The project aims to co-develop a research agenda on the responsible and inclusive use of digital and AI technologies to support people with chronic and progressive conditions. Bringing together people with lived experience, carers, and advocacy organisations, it will address gaps in how AI tools are designed and governed, identifying priorities, challenges, and opportunities for creating trustworthy, person centred, and sustainable AI-enabled care.

Centres of excellence

The University's cross-faculty research centres harness our interdisciplinary expertise to solve the world's most pressing challenges.
