Lucie Waring is in her second year of her BA in Digital Media and Society. She is also the secretary for the Digital Media Society (DigiSoc), a new student society formed in 2024.

When did you first get involved with DigiSoc?

So it’s a very new society as it only started this year. One of my friends on the course wanted to set up a specific course group, like the Sociology Society. While he decided to set it up for the people on our course, we also wanted it to be open to anyone with an interest in digital media. A couple of other friends and I all volunteered to get involved and I put my name forward for the secretary.

The society gained full approval from the university in late 2024 so we became available for people to purchase memberships. We had already generated a lot of interest at the Freshers Fair so it was my job as secretary to reach out to everyone once memberships were available.

How are you finding it so far?

I’m really enjoying it. It’s been great running a society with my friends but I’ve also really enjoyed getting to know more people as we’ve gained more committee members. I’ve got to know lots more people on my course because of the society.

We’ve had lots of meetups so far, mainly going to different restaurants and cafes. We like to keep the socials varied so there’s something for everyone.

What does your role as secretary involve?

The secretary is considered the lead communicator and administrator. Basically, I run the email accounts. If any questions come in or announcements need to be made, then I handle that. I also ensure everyone is aware of when meetings are happening and where. At the moment, because the society is so new, we all work together with our positions. For instance, if someone doesn’t have time to make an announcement then we help each other out.

What kind of activities has DigiSoc run so far?

In the first semester, we participated in the Dance Your Socks Off event with all the other societies. That was a great experience. We didn’t have many members yet and it was our first social, so it was great to meet up and get to know everyone.

We also ran a study session where we could all catch up, see how we were getting on and prepare for exam season. Then we had a bar crawl and a coffee and chat meet up in the Students’ Union. For Christmas, we did an ice skating social which was really nice. We’ve also got another bar crawl and a restaurant visit planned in the second semester.

What would you tell anyone interested in joining DigiSoc?

DigiSoc is a great way to meet people on your course and also others with similar interests to you! It’s all about making friends and you’re more than welcome to bring people along to the events. I’ve brought some of my friends to our socials who aren’t in the society, so we just want to help others meet new people and go out and experience Sheffield.
