K-pop Worlds: Exploring the Global Influence of a Korean Phenomenon Launch Event

K-pop came to Sheffield on Thursday 3rd October when the University Library and the Centre for Korean Studies held a launch event for an exhibition titled K-pop Worlds: Exploring the Global Influence of a Korean Phenomenon.

Launch Event 1

Curated by the University Library in partnership with Dr Hannah Hyun Kyong Chang and Dr Gemma Ballard, the exhibition brought together a variety of K-pop memorabilia with commentary offering insight into the dazzling world of K-pop and K-pop fandom.

The exhibition would not have been possible without the contribution of Korean/East Asian Studies students Mark Huskinson-Smith, Emily Durant and Mia Xinrui Liu, who collaborated with the staff team members  to research and design the displays, which included reflections on their own engagement with K-pop, along with some of their own fan artwork.

The launch event was a lively celebration of music and dance, with presentations from the University Library team, Dr Chang and Dr Ballard on the history and significance of popular music produced in Korea for both Korean and global audiences. The University of Sheffield’s K-pop Dance Society rounded out the launch with a set of expertly choreographed performances of some K-pop hits that went down a storm with the audience.

The exhibition was supported by funding from the National Library of Korea, the University Library and the Academy of Korean Studies Core Grant Programme.
