We welcomed many colleagues from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the wider university and the general public.
We were joined by two special guest speakers, James Grayson, an Emeritus Professor at the School of East Asian Studies and Dr Charlotte Horlyck, an art historian based at SOAS, University of London.
The event began with Dr Grayson sharing about the long history of Korean Studies at Sheffield. This was followed by a fascinating talk by Dr Horlyck on Contemporary Art from South Korea – a Critical Overview of Major Trends and Themes. Dr Horlyck discussed the evolution of Korean art in the context of rapid political, social and economic change in the 20th and 21st centuries. This then led into a Q&A with the audience.
Afterwards, the guests enjoyed prosecco and canapes and discussed both Dr Horlyck’s presentation and what the Centre for Korean Studies aims to achieve.
The Centre for Korean Studies is a leading hub for Korean Studies in the UK and demonstrates Sheffield’s position as a world leader in Korean Studies. As Korean popular culture has gained global attention in recent years, South Korea has affirmed its position as a key player in the global economy and in international affairs. We look forward to expanding our educational offerings in Korean studies, across a broad range of academic disciplines.
All events for the Centre of Korean Studies will be listed on the School of East Asian Studies Eventbrite page.
