When I applied to the University of Sheffield, I was so excited to get started on the MSc Information Management programme, which is currently ranked number one in the QS subject rankings.

A welcoming environment

Since I enrolled last September, I have felt that the Information School is a very warm and welcoming family. The school organised a freshers' party, and during this time there were also many teachers from the school who came to participate and meet the new students. When teaching officially started, all the lecturers were welcoming and they welcomed us to ask them questions. We were also introduced to The Wave, a newly opened teaching building in the university - this is where most of the classes are taught, with very modern facilities and a good atmosphere for learning.

Having my voice heard

During the first few weeks, I also became the student representative for the Information Management programme. I provided the University with feedback the current allocated classrooms were too small to accommodate all the students, and the university gave me a prompt response and adapted suitable classrooms, which made me feel heard and respected. I also applied to be a student ambassador for the Information School (which is why you're reading my profile today!), and after going through the interview process, it made me feel very happy to be given the opportunity to share my experiences.

Careers advice

Early on in the course, I spoke to my personal tutor who gave me a lot of advice about careers and studying for a PhD, which I hope to do in the future. I learnt about the school's careers officers through her, and I took part in employability sessions that taught vital skills such as how to write a CV.  I have also been going to job fairs organised by the school from time to time recently, where I have been able to speak to staff from many companies, which has been very beneficial.

I will return to China after graduation and look for job opportunities in big cities. I tend to look for information management or data analysis related jobs in foreign companies in China.

Plenty of social activities

My favourite thing about the University is being involved in the activities organised by the Students' Union. I was presently involved in an event about rescuing sandwiches.... It was a club that was formed to reduce food waste! There I interacted with students from other courses for the first time and it was a great experience. I also loved my first networking meeting with my classmates, which was held in Firth Hall, a very beautiful building. We didn't know each other well at that time, but we were all interacting in a positive way and it was the beginning of our friendship!

Advice for future applicants

When applying for a degree, you have to think more about your future and whether the programme will have an impact on your future job. I received offers from many different universities, and chose to study at one of the world's leading universities in the field of information management. Such a choice will invariably help you in your future employment - Sheffield is also one of the safer and more comfortable cities in the UK. It's a great place to live and study!
