An MSc degree will help you deepen your knowledge of a subject

I worked prior to my masters, most recently as a data protection officer in an Indonesian technology company. Before that, I worked as a cybersecurity consultant for Ernst & Young (EY). The working world is a completely different environment to the academia, as there are various factors that you need to consider all the time, including politics, risk, and communication. I decided against working too much during the masters itself, as it would be distracting and time consuming - I wanted to focus on my coursework.

An active SU in an idyllic city

There are loads of societies and activities available - more than you have time for as a masters student, so planning your time is essential. I joined the Concert Orchestra and it has been nice to do something completely unrelated to my academic work. Our Student Union is the best in the country (a fact oft repeated!), which shows how active it is.

In terms of the local environment, Sheffield is relatively small, quiet and safe, perfect for people who dislike large cities like myself. It is also comparatively cheaper than bigger cities around the UK, like London. If you like walking, I also cannot emphasise enough how hilly the city is, especially compared to nearby cities like Manchester which are flat!

Plenty of flexibility

There are plenty of modules to choose from on the course. For me, some of the most interesting modules are the electives that are shared with MA Librarianship and MSc Data Science. The dissertation is also a very significant part: you have the most flexibility here, with dedicated time and absolutely no classes during the second semester so you can focus completely on research. This shouldn't be a chore - you have the freedom in the topic, and you can choose something you identify with. My supervisor has been very supportive in helping me throughout the process.

Future plans and advice for applicants

After my degree, I will be heading straight back to my home country, Indonesia. As part of the terms of the scholarship I received from the Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), I will hopefully be able to implement the knowledge I learnt to support the country, and I will in all likelihood resume my career in data protection.

For those looking to apply, you should carefully consider the workload - a one-year masters degree can include a lot of work, and you must ensure that you have the capability and commitment to finish it. A masters degree is not just a "certification to help you get better jobs"; whilst it can do that, it should be something that helps you deepen your knowledge. Information management is a broad subject, so be prepared to have an open mind to explore a range of new subject areas!
