The Scott & Caroline Beaumont - Neuroscience Postgraduate Scholarships
We're offering two scholarships worth £10,000 each for home fee-paying students starting an eligible taught postgraduate course in the Neuroscience Institute in 2025.

How the scholarships are funded
Many scholarships at the University are provided by donations from generous people, organisations and companies that want to support students. Many of the donors are alumni (former students) of the University of Sheffield.
These scholarships are funded by Scott and Caroline Beaumont, both graduates of the University in 1994 and 1993 respectively.
If you receive a donor funded scholarship you may be invited to relevant events during your studies at Sheffield.
Eligibility criteria
The scholarships are available for the courses listed below within the Neuroscience Institute from September 2025 - please note that not all courses within the Institute are eligible.
You can apply for a scholarship if you meet all of the following criteria:
- You are studying full time and paying the 'home' rate of fees.
- You are not already qualified at masters level or higher.
- You are self-funded.
- You are from a group that is evidentially under-represented among the institution's taught masters population (see the widening participation criteria below).
Widening participation criteria
You are eligible to apply for the scholarship if you meet any of the following criteria:
- Have you entered the University through one of our outreach schemes?
To be eligible for this criteria you must have attended one of the outreach schemes run by the University of Sheffield prior to starting your undergraduate course. Eligible programmes are listed below:
Access to Sheffield Summer School
Sutton Trust Summer School
Realising Opportunities
Access to Sheffield (Medicine)
Access to Sheffield (Dentistry)
Access to Sheffield (Law)
Access to Sheffield (Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences)
Access to Sheffield (STEM)
- Are you from a Black, Asian and other minority ethnic group?
We will use the information submitted as part of your course application to assess this.
- Do you have a disability?
You are required to provide evidence to support this. For example, a copy of your DSA notification letter that outlines your condition(s) or other relevant medical evidence, such as a letter from your GP or other health professional. Please note, we cannot accept medication/prescriptions as evidence.
- Do you come from an area where it is not usual for people to go to university? This is defined by the government's classification called POLAR.
To meet this criteria your address must fall into quintile 1 or 2 of POLAR4. We will use the information submitted as part of your course application to assess this. Please note this information only covers the UK.
- Do you come from one of the more deprived areas of the country as defined by the government's Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) database?
If your postcode IMD value is 16,250 or less, you meet this criteria. We will use the information submitted as part of your course application to assess this. Please note this criteria only applies to students who live in England.
- Have you been in care as a looked-after child for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14?
You will need to provide evidence confirming your care leaver status. Your evidence will need to include the dates you were in care. For example, a letter from your local authority, a letter from social services, or proof of legal guardianship, such as a court order.
- Are you estranged from your parents and will be aged under 25 on the first day of your course?
Being estranged means you have no relationship with, or support from, your parents. To be considered an estranged student, this situation must be permanent, and you must have little or no contact with your parents with this being unlikely to change. Further information about eligibility can be found at the link below.
- Are you a carer for an ill or disabled family member?
You are a student carer if you are responsible for providing unpaid care to a relative who has, for example, a long-term illness, physical or learning disability, mental health condition or an addiction.
Further information about eligibility can be found at the link below. Temporary care needs are not considered as part of this scheme.
How to apply
Apply for a Scott & Caroline Beaumont - Postgraduate Neuroscience Scholarship
Applicants currently studying at the University of Sheffield will need to create an account to access the application form or use their MUSE for offer holders details to log in if they hold an offer for a course.
The deadline to apply is 1pm on 19 May 2025.
All eligible applicants will be contacted regarding the outcome of their application before the end of June 2025.
Selection process
All applications will be reviewed by senior members of academic staff and/or professional services staff.
When reviewing your application, we'll look at personal circumstances, widening participation criteria and take into account academic achievements. All applications are anonymised and the decision is discretionary and final.
When assessing your application, we will give regard to whether you have:
- provided a clear rationale for applying for your postgraduate course at the University of Sheffield;
- clearly identified how the scholarship will be beneficial to your student experience;
- clearly articulated future ambitions; these goals relate to the postgraduate degree you have applied for, and they involve appropriate and credible contribution from which others will benefit.
Please note that the scholarship application is a separate process to applying for a course. Being awarded a scholarship does not guarantee you will be made an academic offer. To apply for a course, please use our Postgraduate Online Application Form.
You are not required to apply for your course prior to submitting your scholarship application.
