Dutch is an accessible and fun language to learn! From October 2024, Dutch at the University of Sheffield offers a brand new online Dutch Course, specially designed for the general public. Dutch is an accessible Germanic language spoken by 25 million people across the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname and parts of the Caribbean. It is also consistently in the top five of languages most frequently requested by UK employers.
What will I learn?
Our classes are all about using Dutch in real situations, from ordering food and drinks in a restaurant over buying groceries at the market to informal conversations.
In the first ten weeks of this course we will focus on pronunciation, spelling rules, thematic vocabulary, verb conjugation and basic sentence structures while diving into some cultural features of the Low Countries as well. We also have our own online Dutch grammar channel to help you learn and practise.
With a bit of effort and dedication you will be able to handle most social situations at the end of the course. A Certificate of Completion will be provided to all who successfully complete the course.
How is this course structured?
This course is offered by the MLTC, the reputable Modern Languages Teaching Centre of the University of Sheffield, and runs over two semesters of ten weeks each. You can sign up for one semester or for both semesters.
Each week you have a 1.5 hour online language session in the early evening. Details about the specific day and time to follow.
I was trying to conjugate verbs for some homework I had and couldn't understand why some of these were different or why did they changed. This video explained everything in an easy and simple way making it funny and interesting.

How much does it cost?
The price for each semester (10 language classes) is £150.
The book we use is Nederlands in gang (edition 2018 or later). You will have to buy your own copy of the book which is also available as an E-book and comes with plenty of extra online material.
